A Quantitative Assured Forwarding Service
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Assured Forwarding (AF) service of the IETF DiffServ architecture provides a qualitative service differentiation between classes of traffic, in the sense that a low-priority class experiences higher loss rates and higher delays than a high-priority class. However, the AF service does not quantify the difference in the service given to classes. In an effort to strengthen the service guarantees of the AF service, we propose a Quantitative Assured Forwarding service with absolute and proportional differentiation of loss, service rates, and packet delays. We present a feedback-based algorithm which enforces the desired classlevel differentiation on a per-hop basis, without the need for admission control or signaling. Measurement results from a testbed of FreeBSD PC-routers on a 100 Mbps Ethernet network show the effectiveness of the proposed service, and indicate that our implementation is suitable for networks with high data rates.

Quantifiable Service Differentiation for Packet Networks
In this dissertation, we present a novel service architecture for the Internet, which reconciles application demand for strong service guarantees with the need for low computational overhead in network routers. The main contribution of this dissertation is the definition and realization of a new service, called Quantitative Assured Forwarding, which can offer absolute and relative differentiati...
متن کاملTransport of TCP/IP Traffic over Assured Forwarding IP Differentiated Services
The Internet is currently facing a twofold challenge: to increase network capacity in order to accommodate a steadily increasing number of users, and to guarantee the Quality of Service for existing applications as well as for new multimedia applications requiring real-time network response. In order to meet these requirements, the Internet Engineering Task Force is currently defining the Diffe...
متن کاملFair Assured Services Without Any Special Support at the Core
Many users require IP networks with the capacity to guarantee a minimum throughput even during periods of congestion. Furthermore, it is also desirable to share the excess unsubscribed bandwidth among active users if aggregate demand does not exceed network capacity. This kind of service, named assured service, can be provided through the Assured Forwarding (AF) Per Hop Behavior (PHB) defined i...
متن کاملA flexible soft DiffServ test-bed
We have constructed a teaching and research SLA test-bed using specially developed soft DiffServ routing nodes operating in a Linux environment. The test-bed, and the associated tools, is intended for various levels of study of SLA translation and mapping algorithms. It is instrumented to provide considerable insight into the DiffServ behavior. The software is more modular, flexible and easier ...
متن کاملService Level Agreement Enforcement for Differentiated Services
This paper describes a hierarchical architecture of active policies [1] that performs the management of a differentiated services (DiffServ) network. These policies monitor quality of service (QoS) parameters and dynamically optimize some aspects of the existing equipment and services to provide the best possible QoS to users. This helps the enforcement of Service Level Agreements (SLA) between...
